"Paddle with the best and see the real Florida"
General Club Information - 2010:
The Seminole Canoe and Kayak Club has a long and noble history. It was founded in 1921 and chartered in 1925. We take pridein carrying on the treasured legacy of this club, one of the oldest paddling clubs in continuous existence in the USA. The Club isnon-profit and is funded by yearly dues. A membership is one "individual" or "couple-family". The Club is a fairly balanced mix of couples, families and singles. In 1928 the Club acquired a beautifully-wooded lot on the Ortega River. Over the years the members have constructed a boathouse and a clubhouse which serve as a venue for club activities and family outings. The monthly business meeting of The Board of Directors is held on the 2nd Monday of each month, 7:30 PM, at the Clubhouse. All members are invited to attend the monthly business meeting and participate in discussions following the meeting. Discussions often surround ongoing environmental/preservation issues, up-coming trips, festivals , current events and other topics of interest.
Paddling Trips and Special Events:
The Club conducts about 20 trips per year. Adult couples and singles participate in the majority of trips, however children and young people are always welcome if the paddle is appropriate for their age. Each year there are several clubhouse special events featuring a covered-dish dinner - "Green Corn Festival", "Halloween Party", "Christmas Party" and the Year End Meeting, planning for the upcoming year's activities. A Web based Calendar of upcoming Events is available on this web site and our sister web site at www.meetup.com/flsckc-com as well as a newsletter published several times a year.
What are the benefits of joining a canoe or kayak club?
Trips - we know where, when and how. A group is a wonderful way to develop your paddling skills; collectively, the club members have a lot of knowledge and a wealth of experience to be shared. If an unexpected problem occurs, whether vehicular, boat, or personal- you have a support group.
If you get an urge to do some free-lance paddling or exploring, a companion can be a phone call away. And most of all, it is an opportunity to get involved and be part of something - sharing, camaraderie, and friendship.
Membership
There are two types of memberships:
o Family membership consists of a man and wife and all children under 18. This membership is entitled to one vote in the management of the club, and both husband and wife are eligible to serve as officer(s) or director(s).
o Single membership is open to individuals over 18 years of age. Individual members are entitled to vote in the management of the club and to serve as club officers and directors.
There is a $10 initiation fee to join and the annual membership dues are $53.50. Click on the "Forms" menu above to download a membership application. The application requires the signatures of two sponsors (folks who are already members of the club). If you are interested in joining the SCKC, we would be happy to have you join us on a trip or you may attend a meeting. This would give you a opportunity to see the facilities, meet some members and would also enable you to get the two ( 2 ) sponsor signatures required on the application
Contact the Secretary, Helen Lovell, at (904) 388-6565 (or via e-mail at
hlov0131@bellsouth.net ) for information about activities or membership. Send the completed application to Seminole Canoe and Kayak Club
