The Seminole Canoe and Kayak Club is an active club, founded in 1918 in Jacksonville, Florida, and chartered in 1925. Members take pride in carrying on the treasured legacy of this club, one of the oldest in the U.S. The club is a non-profit organization fully funded by yearly dues, with a membership base comprised of couples, families and singles and represented by all age groups.
In 1928 the club acquired a beautifully-wooded lot on the Ortega River. Over the years members have constructed a boathouse and clubhouse, which serves as a place for club activities and family outings. Monthly meeting are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm at 4619 Ortega Farms Circle, Jacksonville, Fl. 32210.
What kind of trips does the club take?
Most trips are in the northeast region of Florida and Southeast Georgia. Usually there is a convoy
en-route to the starting point, but paddlers are free to travel separately and meet at the starting point. Frequently after a trip, a restaurant is in the cards where we have been known to pause and reflect on the day's outings over a fine meal. A wide variety of trails are explored, from easy meandering streams to more strenuous rivers. Practically all varieties of Florida's inland waters are explored allowing views of lush foliage and abundant wildlife. The trails include intimate tree canopied streams and creeks, secluded backwoods, sun-drenched lake shores and saltland marsh, and above all, spring fed crystal rivers. Some waterway trails are protected wilderness areas accessible only by canoe or kayak. The trips include day trips (full or half days), overnight camping trips (one or more nights) and moonlight cruises.
Club trips are coordinated by experienced paddlers. Members and guests are welcome to participate in any trip or activity. Participants in club paddles are required to sign a liability waiver.
